The Face of God
“There’s only one God, ma’am; and I’m pretty sure He doesn’t dress like
that”- Chris Evans as Captain America in Marvel’s The Avengers
For
those of you who know me personally, you already know that I am a massive comic
book geek. For those of you who only know me through this page, you now know
that I am a massive comic book geek. The quote from The Avengers actually got me chasing this thought “What does God look
like?” The Bible has a few occasions where God appeared to men in his full
glory, but they had to avert their eyes from his face, for no one can look upon
the full glory of God and live. Most theologians would say that because people
have sin within them, we cannot totally enter the presence of God or we would
be destroyed by his perfection.
There
are other instances where God appeared in other forms to people or an
individual. For example, Moses and the burning bush or when God descended as a
cloud upon a mountain to speak with Moses before Moses came back down with the
Ten Commandments. I believe that both instances of God appearing to people were
examples of the power and glory of the all mighty God.
There
is an instance of God appearing that quite a few people saw and have recorded.
This would be God appearing as a man in the form of Jesus Christ. These people
were not destroyed upon viewing Christ because He had surrendered his full
glory to take on the shackles of the human body. Christ fulfilled the
prophecies about him to prove that he was who he said he was. He was crucified
and rose again three days later to fulfill the final prophecies. He still wasn’t
done! Jesus walked among the people for 40 days and then ascended into Heaven
with a crowd of people watching him.
So this
post kinda chased itself in circles, but I think it is unimportant as to what
God actually looks like. What is important is that He chose to appear to his
people and show his power and give evidence that he is the one true God.
